Free Presentation by Donovin Sprague, Friday July 27 at 2pm at the Herrick Elevator. 

He tells the story of Lakota history through family history, with the use of historic photos, artifacts, tribal and government documents and maps. Also, he'll talk about his gr. gr. gr. Grandpa Fred Dupree's buffalo herd! 

FREE and open to the public. Please drop by....and pass this on to anyone who might be interested.

Coffee and cookies will be served.

EDUC 359 Lakota Life Today and as History
3 semester hours of undergraduate credit is available  from  Augustana University, Sioux Falls, SD
Location:  Herrick, SD and surrounding area
Dates:  Monday-Friday, July 23-27, 2011

Workshop fee of $190 can be paid online or by check sent to Cultural Heritage Institute, PO Box 234, Herrick SD 57538.  

The Itinerary is listed below. 

Tuition is $50/credit hour, payable to Augustana University when you arrive at the workshop.

Syllabus/Itinerary for Monday-Friday 5 day workshop (45 hrs)

Monday, 9 hrs

8am       Light breakfast available at Herrick Elevator

8:30        Welcome, Introductions, and Class Rationale by Marty

9:30        Presentation by Barb:  “How Todd Lost his County”

10:15     Leave Herrick Elevator, stops include 99th Meridian, Twin Buttes view, Fort Randall Chapel and Cemetery, Army Corp Rest Stop, Fort Randall Casino for lunch, Visit with Casino Representative, Marty’s St. Paul Catholic Church, site of Signing of Treaty of 1858

4:00        Arrive Herrick Elevator, break, recap day and discussions

5:30        Day One ends

Tuesday, 10 hours

8am       Light breakfast available

8:30        Monday recap and experiential learning by Marty

9:30        Presentation by Barb:  “What Happened After Whetstone?” & Humanities Presentation

11:15     Tour of Herrick, including visit to former Herrick Catholic Church

12noon Lunch at Herrick Elevator

1pm       Drive to Milk’s Camp:  1903 Episcopal Church and cemetery, Congregational Church and
cemetery (if creek allows), Milk’s Camp Day School, Meet Judy Hanson, Milk’s Camp Catholic cemetery

5pm       Indian Tacos served by Judy and her family

6:30pm Day Two ends

Wednesday, 10 hrs

8:30am Trip to Rosebud Reservation:  Bus leaves Herrick Elevator at 8:30, making stops as necessary on our way out to Mission.

10:30     Drive through Antelope Community (compare it to Milk’s Camp Community)

10:45     Visit Sinte Gleska Heritage Center

12noon pizza for lunch

1:30        Mike Marshal presentation on Games and talk about his trip to Smithsonian

2:45        John Spotted Tail talks to group

4:00        St. Francis Church and Museum

6:30        Optional Evening Meal at Frank Day’s Place in Dallas for a great meal, continued discussion and fellowship.  (This is on your own, not covered in the cost of the workshop.)

Thursday, 8.5 hrs

8am       Light Breakfast

8:30        Recap and process

9:30        Jack Broome talks to group, get on buses, travel to Whetstone Bay, Whetsone Agency site, Lunch at Leroy’s cabin, drive to Sully’s Grave and on to Gregory.

3:00        Arrive at OMFF headquarters, tour of building and gardens, Emmet Kotrba speaks

4:30        Return to Herrick

5:00        End of Day Four

Friday, class convenes at 2pm, 7.5 hrs

2:00        Recap and process

2:30        Ronette Rumpca presents SD Historical Society Trunks

3:30        Break

4pm       Print shirts (for those who would like one).  The cost of these shirts is not covered by the workshop fee: $8 each.

5pm       2011 students meet 2012 students, share stories/experiences

6pm       Leave Herrick Elevator for Milk’s Camp. Vendors will be set up at the pow owow:  Supper is on your own.

8:30        Leave Milk’s Camp, return to Elevator, discuss and send participants away

9:30pm Day 5 ends
